ICE Won't Crack Down On Rural Areas Urban Areas Should Demand Equal Treatment
Here's a map of ICE enforcement actions. The map isn't the whole story. Urban areas have far more raids than rural areas, but they do receive some. In truth though, it's usually a relatively rare thing.
To understand the dynamic look at Sibley, Iowa. It's represented by Steve King, one of the biggest opponents of illegal immigrants. No one in Sibley has ever claimed to see an ICE agent there. The town is dependent on illegal immigrants for agriculture labor and is solidly Republican. ICE once raided a farmer who lived nearby in 2011. That's it no other raids of note in that area.
Even Trump himself has claimed that he doesn't want to make E-Verify mandatory. He claimed that it might hurt farmers and that they should be allowed to hire illegal immigrants.
If you want to stop them fight fire with fire. Demand that ICE stage their raids in these rural conservative areas. Without their rural base the Republican party is over. They lose that base if conservative policies are used on them to crush their economy. Steve King and Trump and the others will grovel and give the Democrats anything they want if they push aggressively for this. You can win with immigration. You can tie other issues to this. Their hypocrisy only dooms them if you hold them accountable for it.
Now's the time the Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's of the world should use this to get their vision on immigration and other issues advanced. Nancy Pelosi's and Chuck Schumer's should use this to get good legislation passed that moves the ball back from the Republican's court to their court. Use the power of hearings and congressional investigations on these issues. Pass bills and resolutions in the House that help your cause. Democrats, here are the tools, but you have to use them and not back down. The rest is up to you.
